Challenges Facing Humanity

An interesting news article mentions this list of important challenges for the human race.
  1. Make solar energy affordable
  2. Provide energy from fusion
  3. Develop carbon sequestration
  4. Manage the nitrogen cycle
  5. Provide access to clean water
  6. Reverse engineer the brain
  7. Prevent nuclear terror
  8. Secure cyberspace
  9. Enhance virtual reality
  10. Improve urban infrastructure
  11. Advance health informatics
  12. Engineer better medicines
  13. Advance personalised learning
  14. Explore natural frontiers
It would be so cool even if some of these are accomplished.. like reverse engineering the brain. The blue brain project is one of the significant efforts in this direction.
But some of the points are evergreen(never-ending ) research issues like securing cyberspace. Can we ever develop a bullet proof kinda 100% security technique that cannot be breached.
Also I dont get the significance of virtual reality ? I know it is a hot research area with a lot of money pouring into it. But how does it contribute to society ?

VR is a big n useful thingie dude... imaging a surgeon operating on some patient in third world countries using VR.. and this is just one thing tht came to my mind... n there are infinite possibilities that open up like these that can b useful

I think u might have seen Randy Paush's(CMU's dying prof) lecture and heard of a project named Alice for school children which helps them learn programming & other basic concepts thru gaming(head fake learning as described by him).this is again one such example which came to my mind & there can be many

I do know about the applications of VR, what I do not understand is its significance to be put as one of the important challenges faced by humanity. VR gives more convenient applications like many other CS research areas I agree, but are these things as important as carbon, water, security stuff ?

100% security is imposs, becoz of the simple human factor that comes in. Eg. u will never find a perfect piece of code running, and security breaches are essentially exploitations of such leaks.

On the importance of VR, we can apply it to security too. Use it to counter potential threats. This way it becomes a critical research area.
